The article is headlined "As smoke clears, tobacco company opens lounge". It is written by Monica Davey and published on 19 January, 2006 in "The New York Times". (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/19/national/19smoke.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0). The article is about a lounge for smokers that was opened in Chicago as soon as the smoking was banned.
The author starts with the description of this lounge. He says that it is a glamorous room with vintage ashtrays, delicate lighters and other things for smoking. The article goes on to say that this ban doesn't hurt tobacco business because this lounge exempts category of a "tobacco retail store" and sells alcoholic drinks, cheese plates and espresso drinks. Then the author reports about worries of antismoking advocates. For example, Bronson Frick, associate director for Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights, says that the opening of this lounge makes smoking seem desirable, attractive, like a secret club. The article also includes some predictions and opinions for spreading of such lounges. For instance, Mr. Fahey consider that no one is going to stop smoking because a ban, and more and more places like this are sure to open up. William V. Corr, executive director of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, supposes that glamorizing tobacco use will encourage young people to continue smoking or to begin doing it. But Richard A. Daynard, a law professor, says that this business won't develop. In conclusion, there are words of a citizen of Chicago, mr. Kittrel, who says that this lounge is a very good place where he can drink coffee, smoke cigarettes and read papers.

I found this article interesting because it shows that even a law can't stop smokers on their ways of ruining their health and tobacco companies on their way of earning money. What do think about about smoking ban and this lounge?

  1. I agree with Mr. Fahey that nobody will give up smoking. I consider that it is necessary to create special smoking areas. But I think that people won't go to such lounge every day in order to smoke. They will smoke on the street or at home or somewhere else. Also, the person receives more harm when he breathes a smoke of cigarettes. So in my opinion it is bad idea. Now there are smoking lounges, but not for smoking cigarettes, but hookahs and they are called hookah bars. The description from article suits for it.

  2. In my opinion, smoking outside should be banned, and it is a good idea to create such rooms. We all understand that it is very hard for smokers to give up this bad habit. Because of the lounges they will not be injurious to health of unsmokers. More lounges must be opened in towns and cities for the best result. Otherwise, there is no point in it. But anyway, I hope, people will smoke less, because they should realize that smoking is bad for their health.

  3. As for me I do not agree with William V. Corr.Glamorizing tobacco use in our life,of course, but all people can choose!Smoke cigarettes or not.Smoking is very bad for health and everyone knows about it.But if someone says that he wants-he could! The main moment that people mustn't inconvenience people who do not want to breath tobacco smoke.

  4. I find the smoking ban necessary for most countries including Russia. It would portect our next generations from this harmful habit. Nevertheless, there are lots of people who have been smoking for more than 10 years, and it is very dangerous for their health to give up smoking at once. No wonder that such places as smoking lounges would be very popular. I think that opening special smoking places is a quite good idea, but it would be better to establish an age limit or a high entrance fee there.

  5. I support those who aren't against smoking. I believe that everyone can do what he wants. Everything has to be within reason. Smoking is bad, but everyone chooses it good or bad for him. And I do not see anything wrong in the lounge for smokers.
